Several elections are happening in northwest georgia today and one office up for election is the mayor of dalton.

A victim is speaking out after his belt saved his life.

23-year-old grant gunter was enjoying a usual night out with friends.

When leaving a bar on station street, he noticed two guys stealing from his truck.

Gunter chased after the two and one of the guys turned and fired a shot with a 9 millimeter pistol.

Amazingly, the bullet hit gunter's belt buckle and he avoided serious injuries.

A paramedic told gunter that there was a one in one million chance the bullet would hit his belt buckle.

This encounter is changing his outlook on life.

"i'm still kind of processing that it all kind of happened over in my mind, how different it could've turned out, but very thankful."

Two juveniles males have been arrested in this case.

Arson is what's being blamed for the fire that started at the hamilton county jail.

The criminal investigations division of the sheriff's office is leading the investigation into the incident.

The fire started in the duct area of the h-vac system.

Part of the 4th floor, and both the 5th and 6th floors were evacuated.

No one was injured.

Approximately 500 prisoners are housed in the downtown jail.

150 of them were displaced by the smoke.

An evacuation plan for the entire facility is in place if it's ever needed.

56-year-old anthony vance has been given a lengthy prison term for rape.

A sentencing hearing was held monday morning for vance.

He was already found guilty of rape by a criminal court jury back in august.

Prosecutors say vance was a persistent offender, with 67 convictions for misdemeanors and felonies.

They say he was actually on parole for a previous rape when he attacked his latest victim.

The grand total is 35 years in prison for vance.

As we cover the community, the riverbend festival received some heat after last years changes and this year organizers are going for a fresh start.

The layout of the event will be a major change fitting with the new nick name..

"festival in between the bridges."

The event will also offer better vip opportunities, cheaper admission, and cash bars in two different locations.

The iconic barge will be retiring, but the festival director says a new coke stage is something that riverbend has needed for a long time.

A brand new stage a very large stage.

It will have what we call an ego ramp where the artist can really can go out and really touch the crowd.

" two acts will change up on the coke and bud light stage starting at 6:30, totaling up to 32 popular acts during the festival.

The lineup is set to be released at the end of november, early december.

Now for the forecast, here's chip chapman.

Promise to ensure the four numbers really there giving better instead of worse.

Let's was especially for those of you up in the eggs county area.

As we turn the clock into friday lingering clouds.

The little bit of fog early morning friday in the podge of colder air will be rolling in saturday morning.

I think all of us are going to be below at least at or below the freezing mark ... 32.

The middle part of next week.

Look at how far south as frost and freezing line travel were talking a good part of the florida panhandle.

Almost all the way to new orleans and straight north to the united states, canada, solicited to be a pretty substantial punch of cold air.

The develops for the middle part of next week or the end of next week.

So how important is it for a young team to have an outlet like this to express those type of emotions of really you don't intend to do grief just like yo and i would each person is different and so it's really nice to be able to be with another team that has had a dad die or as had a sibling die statistically one and eight teen kids.

By the time their eight team nationally have had either a parent or sibling die in the state of tennessee.

It's one an 11 and we are the eighth highest state in the nation for parental death and sibling death and majority of the teams that are registered right now have either had a parent by or sibling die and so it's a place where they can join with somebody else and they it really is hard not having my mom here my dad here mice doubling and being able to not feel so isolated in the world and what is the age group for the kids having 13 to 8 teen okay and then how can anybody else register.

We get into next week.

Some changes are going to be popping up as far as colder air is concerned the weekend in front of us.

Looks dry a lot of sunshine cool for the middle part of next week.

It's at the quarry, which used to be a golf course.

In the area, sits a 112 feet tall post oak off reads lake road.

Those against the project say this is the tallest of its kind on record in the united states.

The area had been used as a place where people walked and enjoyed the outdoors.

Neighbors say would like to see it stay that way, with the tree not being cut down.

"well because it is so unique.

It is incomparable.

It is about 200 years old we estimate it should live to be 450 and it would be a shame to cut down a tree that would be enjoyed for many generations to come."

There is a petition to save the tree with nearly 29 hundred signatures.

The developers are with pratt home builders.

We reached out to them and they say they have no comment.

No, not now.

I have not had not i need to better forecast around the area this morning, ladies.

Quick temperature check showing for the indicator still below the fog up and around the meigs county area of cleveland in the lap of 41 tellico's reporting 43 on the battlefield for oglethorpe 40 440 this morning's golfers forecast brought to you by brainard and brown acres and every day we look at a different course in and around the area.

We have 440 here on the south side 20 minutes away from 7 o'clock in the new executive director of the riverbend festival making repayments outlining some of th chip chapman >> you women talk about changes to the riverbend festival that's coming appear.

Believe it or not adjusted right now guys spearheading exchanges.

The new executive director, cropsey lowered friend making so much.

I have pleasure in raleigh.

What a cool thing.

Thi is for you to have a blank slate to totally reinvent the riverbend festival where you begin.

You know it's just a great opportunity for starters, this is tenuous festival and i won't do the things that would cause chattanooga come to riverbend for what of those changes i need to do and that's where started from and what little things is just to visually say this is a new riff riverbend of the barges done a great job for retiring the sheriff and a longtime first time the 35 last year so visually.

People will know that they're coming to a different riverbend when the come right in through just stricken instantly.

Visual things you every step.

It's a new product and riverben is product and we have to do that freshen up her changes tha product.

The other thing that i were doing is the blood.

Lots to bud light stage will move into the chester street area lot very close to the teether so that when you come through the children chester street gang.

You know you're a music festival.

You see a stage route ahead of them.

That's what riverbend and it's a music, testable, and therefore when you come in, you'll see that stage there your know your music your barge will not be in place so you know it's a different riverbend that we are moving the coke stage and this is a major change underneath the o johnny bridge and when we walked that space causes been unavailable to us for three years with the construction owner highway 27 it's a massive amount of fries.

One of the things with the barg was the disconnect between the artist and the audit with this new stage it will be a massive study.

It will have a write up an ego run out they will have a ramp that will enable the artist to connect with god and that wasn't available to us because he was 35 feet up shorter modern one.

I was in th navy destroyer questions.

35.

A peta absolutely little bit abou price when you know a lot of slasher.

The price went up to lately talk about the people at family my family to riverbank.

We want to make it to where at the portable for everyone.

Take our we want to go where it's not are so high that amount that for this year, market and because i get angry.

It's a good and you're right we we reduce the number of days we cu the days from percent we increase the prospect that was a good direction.

What were going to do is make it more affordable.

It will be down probably close to the dollar right would ever ureter group so so it's going to be different riverbend this year crossing was as whales were going make i a notable were our goal is 40, 000 people that lived on the sidelines with the city people and we can fit 40,000 people and will bring in the festival and it's really going to be a festival between the bridge between the o johnny bridge in the market street bridge and so the remoteness of the tennessee valley federal credit site.

I will make it was different.

We need to bring that stage and because it was just too remote part of the festival.

You made the trip up there.

Probably las hitachi more this morning.

We got out.

Thank you so much for me and this morning where bring it back to the right short time stressing the barge way long- standing coke is very top of them brought up.

Sounds good, you became visual.

See you here 340 this morning.

We are lookin at our sportsman's forecast brought to you by the eyelid: outdoor center now look solely for your cloud cover this morning sunshine for the afternoon best time hit the ope water rolled around the route 20 minutes ago.

Identity of 67 even warmer tomorrow okay back to you.

Thank you well.

We had tending mayor auntie bart that's now to talk more about an event taking place, and if anything i is here.

Glad everyone talk about some things that are goin on.

He's organized right here in the tennessee valley start on talking amount of counsel against hate what amount this program is one of the things that i really want to do was to speak up for the city because we see so much hate in 2019.

From our leaders on social media everywhere in our lives and we need to say this is not to chat new gears we we don't believe i that.

And so we started this counsel gets hate and i've been shocked at how resident it's been with people particular faith-based leaders really come to the table to say we don't want to be like that lately and so in the we have an upcoming event.

Please look for it on facebook or on on press releases it with a former white supremacist so he was a white power person.

He's now changed and he's coming to chattanooga tells little bit about that movement.

What it's like and then how he broke out of it.

My changes so important here.

You know we were talking a little bit earlier.

We gun violence here in the scenic city over th last month and i know that department and you are working hard to try to all of this from happening in our area.

Tell us more about the mayor's youth council and why it's so in court and for young people right here in the tennessee valley what to one of the one of the weirdest things about being married.

In this current environment is that if you ask a young person.

What's the most important issue to you almost always a gun violence has sat which is so sad and i've had young people, particularly after the shooting in parkland and others to say in my safe going to school sent happened with that that makes the hair on the back your neck stand up and so we have a mayor's youth council.

They pick what they want to talk about in their biggest issue right now i gun violence so next wednesday.

It i've 30 utc in the testing room are there to put on the a program at all about guns and gun violence.

They are in charge and there get up pitch ideas about how they think it can be better and so i look that up with me.

Turns out because they are the stars of the show and its linear ideas because it their community will be limited absolutely.

We want all absolutely town on education, early touted education.

How important is it here in chattanooga.

It's critical for all kinds of families because if you think about going to work and you got young kids.

My kids were little older now but for tickly armor when my kids were low younger.

My kids were sick or having a problem made it tougher for me to go to work an my wife to do to head out and so for me, we want to do early education because that's where young people's brains are form.

It's also about making sure tha families are strong and so i made a bow couple years ago to do 1000 new high-quality early learning seats were on the path to do that but as part of that we will make sure that everyone is kids has a high quality curriculum, and this year the city purchased that highest quality curriculum, so everybody in the city can be learning fro that no matter where you go and we had our first training the other day, which is great to se these teachers engaging in a high quality curriculum like an oxymoron in a timely way to see you again questions for the mayor what they damn, they can always email me a mirror at age for america and god sees me, they can always call my office export recently hundred 30 city on

You might like
