And this weekend tupelo honored one of its heroes, who endured hardships as a prisoner of war in vietnam.

Wcbi's chad groening has more.

They gathered in the lobby of reed's downtown, waiting for the arrival of smitty harris.

The retired air force colonel is releasing his new book called tap code, which chronicles the events leading up to his being shot down over north vietnam on april 4, 1965, and the nearly eight years he spent as a pow at the infamous hanoi hilton.

Tap code was a system by which prisoners could communicate to each other through the cell walls.

"i by chance happen to learn it before i ever went over to vietnam.

And after i got to vietnam i was able to pass it on other pow's, and it spread like a chain reaction because everyone knew it was so important to our survival that we support each other and have a senior ranking of military organization."

Before the book signing harris told those gathered that it was all about honor.

"i wanted to come home with honor.

So i was not going to cooperate in any way with the north vietnamese.

They didn't like that.

But we followed the code of conduct which is given to all military people, particularly if they're going overseas.

And we tried our very very best to live up to that code and to come home with honor.

And the whole experience was a net plus."

Harris was overwhelmed by the turnout at the kickoff of his book tour.

He says he is forever grateful to the city which embraced his wife louise and his children while he was a pow.

"she found over the eight years that she was here with the children that it was such a wonderful caring and supporting town that when we retired from the air force we knew we were coming back here to live."

Former tupelo mayor jack reed junior hosted the book signing event.

He shares the feeling of all those in attendance just what an honor it is to have the harris's living in the community.

"yeah 90-years old to be just a human library for us to go to and talk with and try to understand some of the challenges that these soldiers have gone through particularly him, it really is n opportunity for us and i'm just so proud to call him tupeloan i sure am."

The harris's will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on december 5th.
