Exam Results Reveal US Students
Are Still Behind in Several Areas.
The results of the
Program for International Student
Assessment were published Tuesday.
Administered to 15-year-olds
in 79 countries, the test measures
academic performance in a range of areas.
The results reveal that
U.S. students continue to
fall behind students in Europe and
East Asia in math, science and reading.
It also found an increasing disparity
among U.S. students between
those with a high performance
and those who perform poorly.
An associate commissioner of
the National Center for Education
Statistics referred to the results as "telling.".
Others in academia cautioned
that "these test scores are not
a pure measure of students’
ability, knowledge and learning.”.
The U.S. ranked 8th in reading,
11th in science and 30th in mathematics
