Indian Army on August foiled infiltration bid in Poonch's Krishna Ghati sector, Jammu and Kashmir. On 7 August, a group of terrorists were attempting to infiltrate across LoC in Krishna Ghati Sector. The Indian Army troops detected the terrorists close to LoC and immediately engaged them resulting in on the spot killing of one terrorist and serious injuries to other two. Army personnel also recovered cache of arms and ammunitions along eatables with Pakistan markings.
In a joint search operation of Indian Army and police Special Operations Group (SOG), a militant hideout was busted in Mangnar forest area of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch. The team recovered arms and ammunition from the hide out."Based on our specific input, we launched a search operation in forest area of Mangnar and recovered ammunition in the hideout," said Senior Superintendent of Police of Poonch, Ramesh Angral. Further investigation is underway.
Motorway connecting Dharchula to China border is closed from past 20 days due to damage in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district. It is causing trouble to Indian Army and locals. While speaking to ANI, the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Dharchula, Anil Kumar Shukla said, "I have issued orders to Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for the opening of road." "They have ensured that this motorway will be opened within 2 days," he added.
A veterinary camp was organised by Indian Army at Bangus Valley in Kupwara district on August 03 to help local villagers living in the remote area of the Union Territory. The Army veterinarians, with assistance from local veterinarians, treated hundreds of domestic animals. An army officer at the site said, "A veterinary camp has been organised here to treat animals. On the occasion of the Bangus Valley festival, we have organised this camp. In farther areas where there are many horses, sheep, and other forms of livestock, veterinary services are not being able to reach them."
COVID-19 outbreak has affected small scale businesses across country. Pineapple farmers and sellers in Dimapur's Molvum village claimed that their sales have dropped by 50% due to COVID-19 pandemic. A local seller Hatneilang Thadou said, "I'm not earning much now since there are no travelers on the highway, I use to earn Rs 1000-1500/day earlier."
India on August 14 witnessed single-day spike of 64,553 cases and 1007 deaths in the last 24 hours. The COVID-19 tally rose to 24,61,191 including 6,61,595 active cases, 17,51,556 discharged/migrated and 48,040 deaths. The total number of COVID-19 samples tested till August 13 stands at 2,76,94,416. Of these, 8,48,728 samples were tested yesterday.
At least two police personnel were killed in a terrorist attack on police party in Jammu and Kashmir's Nowgam. Police said that terrorists belong to Jaish-e-Mohammed terror outfit. The incident also left a police personnel injured. The policemen belonged to the 20th battalion of IRP. The police personnel were rushed to a hospital for treatment. On reaching the hospital, two of them were declared dead. The area where the attack took place has been cordoned off. IG Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, said, "Two terrorists fired indiscriminately on our police party. Two of our jawans were martyred, one injured. We have identified them, they belong to JeM group. We will neutralise the terrorists soon. We get such inputs every year before August 15 and January 26. We had inputs that they will try (an attack) in some area. Our men were alert and prepared but terrorists came from the rear side and fired on them. In a tweet, Jammu and Kashmir Police said that the attack took place near Nowgam Bypass.

India gears up to celebrate the nation's 74th Independence Day on August 15. Security has been put on high alert in the national capital. Strict checking on vehicular movement is being done across the city. This year, curtailed celebrations have been planned in view of Covid pandemic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the Tricolour flag at Delhi's Red Fort to mark Independence Day. The Prime Minister will also address the nation on August 15. It will be PM Modi's second Independence Day speech of his second consecutive term in office. In Jammu and Kashmir, a full dress rehearsal was held in Doda ahead of the Independence Day. The Tricolour flag was unfurled by Additional Dy Commissioner, Doda, Kishori Lal. A march past also took place by cadets at the Sports Stadium. Jammu and Kashmir Police, Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) took part in the dress rehearsal. Students of educational institutions also participated and presented cultural program at the event.

With an aim to develop floriculture in the Kashmir valley, the government has re-developed a substation floriculture center in Srinagar which will help to produce quality plants and flower saplings. In September 2014, floods destroyed maximum infrastructure including the nursery known as substation floriculture center. In order to reinstate the quality material of flower saplings and other plant material, authorities have taken strong step in reviving the nursery for local farmers.
With an aim to bring sports at grass-root levels and to nurture the young talent from far flung areas of Kashmir Valley Government of India has allocated Rs 4 crore each for construction of indoor sports stadiums in all the 22 districts of the Union territory. These stadiums would offer multi-utility sports facilities for the local youth to groom their talent. One such indoor sports stadium is being constructed at Tral area of Pulwama district of South Kashmir. The construction work is going on at full pace and will be completed soon. Construction work is being executed by engineering wing of sports council. Indoor stadiums will have facilities such as gymnasium, volleyball and badminton courts, and these projects have to be completed during the financial year 2019-2020. Local sportspersons appreciated this step taken by the Centre as it will help local talent to showcase their potential in the country and world stage.
The doors of development have opened since the Kashmir Valley has become Union territory. A UK-returned Kashmiri woman is a talented entrepreneur with a vision to establish her own business. Sana Jeelani has started a cupcake business aiming to make her future in baking and confectionery. This self-taught entrepreneur has started her online business from her home, named 'Ziggy's Cupcakes'. She said, "Her family has helped her to scale up the business." Fortunately, women of the Valley are taking a step forward to stand on their own feet.
Preparations for Independence Day celebrations are in full swing ahead of August 15. In Jammu and Kashmir, a full dress rehearsal was done on August 11 in Udhampur. Only eight contingents participated in the rehearsal. Authorities have imposed precautionary measures amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Children and NCC have been told to not join the event. Meanwhile, in Delhi, security was beefed up in Delhi ahead of Independence Day. Police were seen checking vehicles at several places in the capital. Preparation for Independence Day is underway in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur. Full dress rehearsal was held on August 11. Only eight contingents participated in the rehearsal, two CRPF, five Jammu and Kashmir Police, one Home guard contingents. Authorities are enforcing special precautionary measures in view of the coronavirus pandemic. All those who participated in the parade had already undergone COVID-19 test and all were tested negative. The main function will be held at Government Degree College Ground, Udhampur. The country will celebrate its 73rd Independence Day this year.
In order to promote Fit India Movement, Director General of Police, Dilbag Singh, inaugurated Open Air Gymnasium at Housing Colony Park in J-K Udhampur. The facilities are incorporated by Police Headquarters J-K through Range Police Headquarters Udhampur. Gym is equipped with NKS Sit Board Double station, Air Walker-Air Stroller, Chest Press outdoor GYM Equipment, Two Wheel LT-26, Twister-Outdoor Gym Equipment, and Leg Press, for the exercise of different parts of body.
