Security on high alert in Delhi; full dress rehearsal in J&K ahead of I- Day

India gears up to celebrate the nation's 74th Independence Day on August 15.

Security has been put on high alert in the national capital.

Strict checking on vehicular movement is being done across the city.

This year, curtailed celebrations have been planned in view of Covid pandemic.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the Tricolour flag at Delhi's Red Fort to mark Independence Day.

The Prime Minister will also address the nation on August 15.

It will be PM Modi's second Independence Day speech of his second consecutive term in office.

In Jammu and Kashmir, a full dress rehearsal was held in Doda ahead of the Independence Day.

The Tricolour flag was unfurled by Additional Dy Commissioner, Doda, Kishori Lal.

A march past also took place by cadets at the Sports Stadium.

Jammu and Kashmir Police, Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) took part in the dress rehearsal.

Students of educational institutions also participated and presented cultural program at the event.

Cluster farming to boost earnings of vegetable growers in JandK's Kandi village

The Kandi belt in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district is yet to get irrigation facility. However, to keep the livelihood of farmers afloat, the Agriculture Department has started a project to introduce new farming techniques to the locals of Kandi. Around 70 farmers in the Kandi belt are now growing multiple vegetables in their fields in the rainy season. This organic farming method has multiplied their earnings by 3-4 times. The farmers use cluster method by cultivating similar vegetables which include cucumber, lady finger, Brinjal and bitter gourd. One of the farmers appreciated the administration's initiative, and said earlier only one house used to grow cucumbers, but since the government intervention, almost all the farmers have started cultivating such vegetables and more.

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research on September 20 informed that Drugs Controller General of India has approved CSIR's paper-based testing kit called Feluda for COVID-19. CSIR, Director General S Mande said, "Our Delhi CSIR lab's been working on studying CRISPR-Cas immunity. They have experience of working in this particular area before COVID-19 and could repurpose the thing for COVID and developed a paper-based testing kit called Feluda and got formal approval from DCGA. Mande further explained the functioning of the paper based test. "It's different as RTPCR detects RNA and amplifies it using a polymerase chain reaction that is costly. This paper-based test also detects RNA but by a CRISPR guided system. The paper lights up if there is any virus RNA to show a sample is positive, in 45 minutes," he added.
