After nearly two years, high school spring sports are set to return

It's been a long-time coming, but high school spring athletes are gearing up to play in their first contests in almost two years.

Around our region will be back on diamonds, tracks, courses and courts for the first time since 2019.

This week marks the beginning of the spring sports season.

Athletes have waited patiently and stayed ready to take the field again after missing out on so much.

Baseball, softball, tennis, golf and track & field all starting again for six weeks.

These athletes have waited longer for high school games than any other season-- after completely missing out on games in 2020.

Come tomorrow, when they get their first contest of the season, the long wait will be over.

Dillan anway: "getting baseball back was a big hope in my life because i don't know if i'm going to be able to play it after high school, i don't know if i want to play college baseball but it's a true blessing.

Us seniors, we didn't know if we were going to have it and so we just dug deep and grinded throughout the offseason and here it is."

With contests set to begin tomorrow, the enthusiasm for getting back out and competing is building.

Gabby heiken: "it's a lot of excitement i mean most of these girls have never played in a game before because they either started last year or this year as freshman and so it's a lot of excitement, lot of positive energy being out there, lots of talking.

Everybody's looking forward to it because we've waited so long."

Kirsten morgan: "i'm just, i'm really excited.

I mean, i'm kind of nervous because we haven't been out on a softball field in over two years so it's kind of a little nerve-wracking but i'm mostly excited.

I'm really looking forward to it."
